Seaweed Granules - Salt alternative for High Blood pressure Patient

High blood pressure, strokes, and early death can be prevented by using seaweed granules in bread and processed food instead of salt, as per scientists at Sheffield Hallam University in the UK. Strong flavor is delivered by seaweed granules. Seaweed granules are very low in sodium as well as have perfect balance of all the mineral salts. They contain only 3.5 % sodium level rather than 40% found in salt. They also have essential micronutrients. Its consumption makes you feel full so it helps to decrease obesity.

They also help in other health problems like diabetes, breast cancer, thyroid problems and cardiovascular disease. The Government-funded Food Innovation Project carried out a study in which they found that when seaweed granules are replaced with salt in baked goods, consumers find it almost impossible to feel the difference. To develop seaweed granules use as a natural, health-boosting substitute to salt in processed food researchers have been working with commercial suppliers.

Seaweed granules maintain the taste of the food as well as extend shelf life of food. 2 out of 5 major supermarkets of UK are considering to use seaweed granules in breads following taste tests and research confirming its safety. Processed foods provide about 75% of our daily salt intake and average adult has 50% more salt consumption than the recommended value of 6g per day.

Too much consumption of salt can cause high blood pressure, which increases the risk of developing heart attack or stroke by 3 times. So by replacing salt with granules in supermarket sausages, ready meals, and cheese helps to decrease high blood pressure and 70,000 heart attacks & strokes every year in the UK. Researchers also advise that the growth of food poisoning bugs in meat products can be destroyed or reduced by granules. As per Dr Craig Rose, seaweed granules have very good and defined taste which can be a very beneficial for a variety of foods.

Seaweeds are used as food, food additives, medicine, fertilizer, industrial, etc. There are many types of seaweed such as agar-agar, kelp, dulse, arame, nori, hijiki, wakame, kombu, etc. Seaweeds contain high amount of minerals such as potassium, calcium, copper, zinc and magnesium. They are very rich in iodine and iron. Seaweeds have many health benefits such as it helps to detoxify the body, relieve skin conditions, increase metabolism, relieve osteoarthritis symptoms, helps in digestion, reduce menopause symptoms, boost immune system, prevent cancer, control weight, enhance energy and mental alertness.
