How to stop bedwetting in Children?

An embarrassed child in wet pants on a wet bed sheet is a common scene in many homes. Bed-wetting does not mean that the kid has not been trained well with the toilet etiquettes. It is a common childhood condition, which is also known as nocturnal enuresis or night time incontinence. It occurs when there is an unintentional loss of urine during sleep in children who are 5 to 7 years old and even in teenagers. So, you should not blame or punish the child for such a condition. Avoid making it an issue every time. Do not allow anybody tease the child about the bedwetting. Do not discuss it in front of others. All this will help your child cope with this problem emotionally. You may help your child to stop this embarrassing bedwetting problem in many other ways as well.

How to stop bedwetting in Children?
1. Develop a habit to visit the toilet before sleeping

Make sure that before going to bed, the kid goes to the toilet. Make it a regular routine before going to the bed. This can trim down the bedwetting problem to a great extent. In case the child forgets it someday, just wake him/her up to go to the toilet. It is necessary because later it could cause them to urinate in the bed. Apart from controlling bedwetting, your child will also develop a good habit of visiting the toilet before going to bed.

2. Set an Alarm

This tip has helped many parents efficiently to treat this habit. Just notice the time when the child normally urinates on the bed. Remember the time and set an alarm to wake the child up some time before that particular time. Make him/her visit the toilet. Now as the bladder of the child gets empty, he/she may not pass the urine again on the bed. So, you do not need to worry about a wet bed sheet. A good result may be noticed within 2 to 3 months.

3. Bed Wetting Alarm

A bed wetting alarm may also help you. Such an alarm senses when the kid starts to wet the bed and goes off. These types of devices are generally attached to night wear and act as a buzzer that gets triggered by moisture. This method educates the child to react to a full bladder, so that the kid may get up and go to the toilet. The child will become skilled to stop bedwetting about 85% of the time.

4. Switch on the Toilet Lights

Generally children develop the fear of darkness. So even if they want to go to the toilet, they tend to avoid it due to the darkness. If you want to encourage the habit of your child to visit the toilet at night, never switch off the lights of the toilet. This will make it easy for the kid to find the way to the toilet without a fear. It will also encourage the good habit in your kid.

5. Limit Consumption of Fluids

Limit the water or any other fluid consumption nearly two hours before the bed time. This can also help you effectively with the bed wetting. Tell them to drink lots of water during the day time, so that they do not get dehydrated. Do not allow the kids to have caffeine infused drinks, especially at the night time. Caffeine has a urine producing result on the body, which may enhance the problem.

6. Encourage the kid

Encourage your child to control bedwetting. Praise him/her on waking up dry. Even if it happens just tell them that it is not their fault and it happens with many other kids as well, so there is nothing to be ashamed of. Make the child help you in changing the bed sheets. Let him/her consider this as a punishment for bedwetting. If the child feels being punished, do not make him help you because it may depress him.

Even if you are not able to stop the wet sheets or pants, you can still keep an eye on your child habits. It may take time to find the solution, but do not ever forget that this situation is much more difficult for the child to deal with, as compared to you. Try to remain patient, do not count the failures, and keep yourself focused on the aim.
