How to treat acidity at home?

Stomach acidity is one of the most common digestive disorders that affect people of every age group. The condition of acidity, also known as hyperacidity, is actually triggered when there is an imbalance in the stomach’s acid secreting mechanism. With the help of the gastric glands, our stomach releases acid that is required for the breaking down of foods during the process of digestion. When the gastric glands start producing acids in excess, it results in condition called acidity. Don’t ever make the mistake of taking this problem lightly. It can become a serious threat for your health, if it remains untreated for longer period of time.

How to treat acidity at home?
The person affected by acidity has to suffer through some frustrating symptoms such as heartburn, nausea, sour taste in mouth, stomach pain, burning sensation in stomach, etc. In the worst case, if any individual suffers from severe acidity problem on regular basis, then the condition of acidity can get advanced to some serious conditions like ulceration, scarring, inflammation, or even hemorrhaging in the person. There are several causes for acidity among which the main ones are spicy foods, stress, alcohol, smoking, caffeinated drinks, carbonated beverages and soft drinks.

There are numerous medicines available in the market that claims to give instant relief for acidity but in reality people end up suffering from various side effects. So, if you want to get rid of this problem of acidity without any side effects, then go for natural home remedies. These natural remedies can cool your stomach and cure acidity instantly and effectively. Few such helpful remedies are given below.

Natural Home Remedies for Acidity:

  • Drink fresh mint juice every day. Having mint juice before meals is really an effective natural cure for acidity. Another method is to boil the mint leaves in 1 cup of water and slowly sip it after your meals.
  • Take 1 glass of water. Add 2 tsp of apple juice and 2 tsp of honey in water. Drink it before having your meals.
  • Chew fennel seeds after half an hour of every meal.
  • Drink aloe vera juice before taking meal.
  • Try to include ginger in your diet as much as possible. Chewing raw ginger will give you instant relief from acidity. Drinking ginger tea twice a day is also very beneficial. To prepare ginger tea, boil 1 inch of ginger (after peeling) in 1 cup of water for around 5 minutes. That’s it, your ginger tea is ready. You can also add some crushed ginger while preparing the normal tea.
  • Keep 1 piece of clove in your mouth and slowly suck on it after every meal.
  • Chew 4 or 5 fresh holy basil (tulsi) leaves prior to meals.
  • Drink fresh coconut water for at least 4 to 5 times in a day.
  • Take 1/2 glass of water and add 1 lemon juice and 1/2 tsp of sugar in it. Drink it ahead of your meals.
  • Intake of fresh and raw radish is very beneficial in getting relief from acidity. You can also have its fresh juice.
  • Have 1 glass of cold milk everyday for immediate relief from acidity.
  • Drink thin butter milk after adding one fourth teaspoon of black pepper powder in it.
  • Keep a piece of jaggery in your mouth and suck it slowly, after taking the meals.
  • Boil few cumin seeds in 250 ml of water and consume this juice for 2 to 3 times a day.
  • Mix 2 teaspoon of natural apple cider vinegar and 2 teaspoon of raw honey in 1 glass of water. Drink the prepared juice before meals.
  • Include fruits like watermelon, banana and cucumber in your daily diet.
  • Drinking one glass of lukewarm water daily in the early morning is one of the simplest yet effective remedy for acidity.

Some Important Tips to Prevent and to Fight Against Acidity:

  • Drink lots of water (at least 6 to 8 glasses) everyday, in order to dilute the acids in the stomach.
  • Strictly avoid spicy foods, fried foods, pickles and chocolate.
  • Say no to tea, coffee & other aerated drinks and as an alternative, start taking herbal tea having spearmint or liquorice.
  • Eat your food slowly by grinding the food properly. Avoid drinking fluids while you take your meals.
  • Don’t keep a huge gap between the meals. At the same time, avoid eating between meals as your stomach requires 5 to 6 hours of rest for proper functioning.
  • The dinner must be very light and it should be taken much before going to bed. Sleeping immediately after meals can make you suffer from the condition of acidity.
  • While you sleep, make sure that the upper part of your body is kept elevated by 6 to 8 inches with the help of pillows.
  • Avoid certain gas forming foods such as beans, cauliflower, cereals, eggs, macaroni, cranberries, peppers, etc. until the situation improves.
  • Always sit in an erect position at the dining table while eating.
  • Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes. Such clothes will press your abdominal part, which can cause acidity.
  • Say no to smoking and alcohol.
