How to get rid of old blood stains on bed mattress?

Dealing with stains is among the most annoying things when it comes to mattress care. You cannot throw a mattress in the washing machine or soak it for a few hours. The most difficult stain to remove from mattresses is BLOOD, particularly dried blood. So, it is best to remove a blood stain right away or as soon as it is discovered to make the removal process easier. The earlier you get to the blood stain, the more likely you will be able to remove it. However, it is not always possible to get to a stain immediately. Old and dried blood stains are difficult to remove, but not impossible. You can get rid of old blood stains on bed mattress with the help of common household items. Read on to know the ways to get rid of old blood stains on bed mattress.

How to get rid of old blood stains on bed mattress?

Blood is protein so the heat is its greatest enemy. You should not use lukewarm or hot water to clean the blood stain. Also, don’t iron the stain till it is removed. Heat in any form (wet or dry) sets the stains, making it impossible to remove. Always use cold water to rinse a blood stain. You should also avoid rubbing and scrubbing the stained area as they will only spread the stain further into the fabric so dab or blot at the stain while removing it. Moisten the dried blood stain using a sponge before using any remedy. After removing a stain, you must clean the left over solution or paste with a dampened cloth as well as dry the area using a towel/cloth. Air-dry the mattress completely before placing a sheet.

Ways to Remove Old Blood Stains on Bed Mattress

Cornstarch, Table Salt and Hydrogen Peroxide

Take a bowl and make a mixture of cornstarch (2 Tbsp), table salt (1 Tbsp) & hydrogen peroxide (1/4 cup). Spread the above mixture on the stain with a spoon and wait till it dries. Brush off the dried paste using a spoon. If the blood stain is still there, repeat the process until you have removed as much of the stain as possible.

Cold Saltwater

Add 2 Tbsp of salt in 1 cup of cold water and transfer the concoction into a spray bottle. Spray the concoction on the stain and blot it with a dry cloth. Continue the procedure till the stain disappears or the cloth does not absorb any more blood.

Vinegar

Take a spray bottle and pour water & 2 Tbsp. of white vinegar. Mix them well by shaking the bottle. Spray the solution on the stain and blot it with paper towels. Paper towels will absorb the blood. Carry on this method until no more blood comes up. You can also use two parts of bleach and one part of water instead of white vinegar.

Detergent and Water

In a large bowl, make a solution by mixing 1 Tbsp of liquid dish soap and 2 cups of cold water. Soak a white cloth with the mixture and apply on the stain. Then, brush the stained area with a toothbrush and rinse the mixture using a wet cloth. If required, repeat the process.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Simply, put a small amount of 3% hydrogen peroxide on the stain and wait for 30 seconds. It will start to bubble. Let it bubble for a minute and then blot the stained area with a dry cloth. Continue the process till the stain disappears.

Ammonia and Water

Make a mixture of 1 tbsp. ammonia & 1 cup cold water in a bowl and pour it in a spray bottle. Spray the solution on the stain and leave it for around 5 minutes. Use a clean cloth to blot the stain. Repeat the process if necessary.

Meat Tenderizer

In a bowl, add 1 Tbsp of meat tenderizer and 2 tsp of cold water. Apply this thick paste on the stained area with fingers and brush it off after 1 hour. You can use the paste again, if the blood is not removed completely.

Baking Soda and Water

Apply a thick paste of baking soda (1 part) and cold water (two parts) on the blood stain. As the paste dries, scrape it away. Repeat the process if needed. Corn Starch can be used in place of baking soda.

Powdered Laundry Soap and Water

Spread a paste of powdered laundry soap and water on the stained area. Scrub the paste with a clean cloth, and allow it to sit for 5 to 10 minutes. After that, wipe it away.

Shaving Cream

Spray shaving cream onto the stained area and wait for few minutes. Blot the area with a damp cloth and repeat the process till the stain is removed.

Many people have posted this query about how to remove blood stains. It is a tough stain to remove as most often we realize it only after it has dried up.
