Skunks, also known as polecats in America, are small black and white mammals that are famous for their ability to spray a stinky liquid. All skunks have scent glands underneath their tails. The strong odor can cling to clothing, skin, pet fur, carpets, cars & homes, and also this smell will last for several weeks or even months if immediate action is not taken. Fortunately, there are several home remedies that can help you get rid of that nasty scent from your house, car and clothes. A few such effective home remedies are given below. Have a look.

How to get rid of skunk smell in house, Car and Clothes?

Remove skunk smell from a house

1, First wear rubber gloves on your hands to prevent them from becoming dry or irritated while cleaning and eliminating skunk odor.

2, Add one gallon of white vinegar and around one cup of dishwashing detergent to one gallon of hot water in a bucket. And then stir the solution properly.

3, Take a clean cloth and wet it with the vinegar solution. Now, with the help of this cloth, clean all ceilings, walls, floors and furniture. Next, wipe out all the surfaces with a damp cloth and then with a dry towel.

4, Sprinkle some activated charcoal over the surface of dark-colored carpets and upholsteries, whereas for lighter colored surfaces use baking soda. Leave the deodorizer on them for at least 24 hours to suck up the skunk smell. After that, vacuum the powder off with a vacuum cleaner.

5, Place small bowls filled with white vinegar in all rooms for a day or two to remove any leftover skunk odor.

6, Put a few drops of vanilla extract on a cotton ball and place this cotton ball in the room. This will replace the stinky smell of skunk with the pleasing aroma of vanilla.

Remove skunk smell from a car

1, Take your car to an automatic car wash and let it go through an undercarriage, wash one or two times. Even after doing so, if your car doesn’t get rid of the skunk smell, then try one of the following treatments.

2, Make a simple homemade solution by mixing about 2 quarts of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 3 tsp of dishwashing liquid, and 1/2 cup of baking soda. In addition to this solution, you’ll need one bucket, a soft-bristled scrub brush or a clean rag for eliminating the skunk smell from your car. Now, apply the solution generously on all areas under your car, including the undercarriage, rims, and tires. Allow the homemade solution to remain there for quite a few minutes before you rinse it away using clear water.

Note: Make sure to mix the ingredients only shortly before using and also see to it that they are not placed in any closed container.

3, One of the conventional methods for eliminating skunk odor from a car is to use tomato juice. The natural acid present in tomato juice works really well to diffuse the smell lingering by a skunk. Now, take some tomato juice and put it on the rims, tires, and undercarriage area of the car. And if required, repeat the procedure for one more time before washing it away with clear water.

4, Coarsely ground coffee beans is another superb ingredient that can help in absorbing the odor of skunk. Put some used coffee beans in shallow bowl and place them inside your car. Leave them there for at least 24 hours before taking out, as this will absorb the unpleasant odor and leave behind a clean fresh scent in your car.

Remove skunk smell from clothes

Skunk spray has the tendency to permeate into the fibers of clothes, and hence it’s quite tough to remove the skunk odor from clothes. One of the most effective methods for cleaning clothes that have been skunked is given below. For this, you’ll require:
  • Laundry detergent (in abundance)
  • Hottest water possible
  • 1 cup of baking soda
  • 4 cups of vinegar
Add vinegar, baking soda and laundry detergent into a tub filled with water, and then wash your clothes with it. However, never do the mistake of putting your clothes in the dryer until the odor is gone completely. If you do so, then there are chances of odor clinging permanently to your clothes. To prevent such awkward situation, it is better to hang the clothes in the sun to dry.
